The Wonder of Epsom Salts

Some of you may have heard of it and others not. So what exactly are Epsom salts are what will they do for you?

First of all, Magnesium sulfate is the scientific name for Epsom salt, which looks a lot like table salt. The magnesium and sulfates in Epsom salt are easily absorbed through the skin and may increase the magnesium levels in your body.

How does it help? Epsom salts have a long list of benefits for the body.
  • Inflammation and Pain: People with arthritis and sports injuries may find the salts useful for reducing pain and swelling
  • Impurities: The sulfates help flush out toxins and draw impurities away from the skin. Only soak for 10 minutes at a time to avoid toxins getting reabsorbed.
  • Cold and Flu: The Epsom Salt Council says that soaking in an Epsom salt bath may spur vasodilatation, which increases white blood cell production, helping your body fight illnesses

Other benefits include exfoliation, relaxation, and poison ivy relief!

If you are wondering where you can buy some Epsom salts, any grocery or drug store carries them. And they are usually cheap! When adding the salts to your tub, 1 to 2 cups for a standard bathtub is enough. The water shouldn’t be too hot or steamy and before you dive in, make sure the salts have dissolved.

One final tip, be sure the consult your physician before using Epsom salts if you are pregnant or have a medical condition.
