Hot? Hydrate!

Charleston and Mt. Pleasant are great places for outdoor sports – surfing, jogging, tennis, golf, SUPing, kayaking, even fishing! They are also very hot and humid places! We have been experiencing record highs in the lowcountry – our friend and meteorologist, Dave Williams, can attest to that! During these extremely hot summer months we sweat more than any other time of year, even if we are merely relaxing outdoors! Times of excess water (sweat) loss put you at risk for dehydration and possibly heat stroke. Symptoms of dehydration include:

  • Thirst
  • Decreased urine output
  • Dry mouth
  • Headache
  • Constipation

During moments of dehydration, or to protect yourself from dehydrations when you are exerting yourself, be sure to consume PLENTY the following:

  • Water (obviously !)
  • Fruits
  • Vegetables (remember that water can come from foods, not only drinks!)
  • Coconut water (replaces electrolytes w/o the sugar of Gatorade)
  • Lemon water (also replaces electrolytes)

When muscles, tendons, ligaments and cartilage get dehydrated you run increased risk of injury. If you think you have experienced a dehydration related injury it’s important to re-hydrate and seek out attention for the injury quickly. Call Sam to schedule an appointment with one of our doctors! Remember – our chiropractors are athletes too!!
